Erik Spiekermann: Design’s Effects on Politics

Erik Spiekermann is a well know typographer and designer. In this interview, around eight minutes in, he discusses the effects of poor design on the relationship between citizens and governments. He advocates for the inclusion of thoughtful design to improve citizens comprehension of their government. Give it a watch.

Shaving With a Minimalist’s Razor: Introduction (Part 1)

A simple and powerful principle in design is to include only what has a clear purpose. Minimalists, a school of design, take this further by trying to include only what is necessary; summarized by Antoine de Saint-Exupe, “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” Determining what is necessary, when there is nothing left to take away, is often pondered in the field of philosophy and the conclusions that minimalists along with many philosophers come to are startlingly narrow.

Over the next few weeks I will expose where minimalists and philosophers have gone astray. Their errors are surprisingly similar and I hope you keep with me till the end.

It’s About Content!

Welcome to my newly aligned website. You may notice it’s different than other sites: it’s all about the content! The newest posts are in the first place you look, the upper left part of the page, so you can dig in. Other sites expect you to look at their logo and then hunt for the content, what you came for. Here, you don’t have to fuss with finding the content.

You’ll also notice that this is really easy to read. It is legible. That is because I’ve taken into account that we don’t, or shouldn’t, sit a few inches away from our screens so our typography should reflect this. As the density of pixels increases on our screens the size of letters get smaller and most websites don’t account for this. Here, you can enjoy the creamy goodness of effortless typography.

I am hopeful that the content will live up to this wonderful design. New posts will be added soon.

A Fresh Design!

The new site is up but not fully polished. Pardon any dust hiding in the cracks I am cleaning as I go. I’m eager to write articles that have been brewing in my head for several years and some freshly conceived ones too. Watch out here they come.

My design portfolio and photography will be back soon.
